How does your Garden Grow?

Thank goodness for some fantastic weather!!  All this sunshine and happiness had me thinking it was time to work on my Garden…

 or lack thereof…

I built a Garden Planter!  With a little help from the Hubby here and there of course.

I have to back up a little and show you where I started and the blank slate I was working with.

Yard Before 3 - Primer & Painted Nails

This corner of the yard is a seriously blank slate… I picked a little section of it off to the left and started there… the rest is still a work in progress.. as is that fence of mine that needs some re-staining… that’s for another day!

Here is the area I chose to work on… boring!!

Yard Before 2 - Primer & Painted Nails

The Hubby and I decided that we needed a raised Garden Planter here for two reasons.

First being that I really prefer to Garden standing up as it helps preserve my lower back from going out as it often does.

Second is that we have lots of bunnies that like to eat plants and we also have dogs that love to pee on and destroy all things good and pretty in the yard.

Of course, we started out at Home Depot rounding up all the necessary supplies.

We chose to go with Cedar – mostly for the looks of it.  The plan was to build a 6 foot by 3 foot planter.  We started by cutting down our cedar and assembling it as frames.

Frames - Primer & Painted Nails

The process of building these frames is pretty simple.

Measure the distance you need and cut each corner on a 45 degree angle.  We used wood glue, small nails and corner brackets to secure it all together.

Once the frames of cedar were all done, we started adding the corrugated metal – which we cut down with tin snips.

I initially just stapled the metal to the frames on the interior side but realized later that this was not going to be quite secure enough so we added finish nails as well.

Once all these frames were put together with the metal it was time to assemble them in place.

We nailed all the sides together and used corner brackets on the inside of the planter as well.

**Now that the dirt is in the planter as well it adds quite a bit of weight so we have decided to add more corner brackets.. more on that later as we have not done this step yet**

Once the planter was assembled and in place I decided I needed some additional planters on the sides for some added color.

I found some old planters in my garage and decided with a little spray paint those would be perfect.

I also decided to scavenge some leftover plywood in my garage to make a sweet Garden Sign!

My final step in this project was checking all the Fruits & Vegetables in season at Home Depot and deciding which ones to add to my new Garden Planter!!  This step was totally fun as it was absolutely gorgeous outside today!!

I also made a last minute decision to add plant markers… so I know what I have in there!  Home Depot sticks, gold spray paint and a purple Sharpie was all it took to complete this little project!!

I am super happy with how this turned out!

I am going to keep my fingers crossed that all these things I planted will actually thrive and grow… I cannot pretend that I am a gardener… all I can say is I will give it my best effort!!
